Absorbing humidity, what solution is the best?

When we refer to humidity we rarely do so to comment on its benefits. Because vapor in the air is, of course, very necessary for life and low levels would also be harmful. However, in ventilation and especially in homes, when we talk about the phenomenon of vapor in the air, we are referring to the conflict caused by suffering from an excess of this phenomenon. So absorbing humidity where it concentrates is important. A high level can cause significant problems in our homes.
We find humidity anywhere there is life. In homes and buildings, it can be found in the same environment or steaming up windows at certain times. But when it starts to become very concerning is if we see it on the walls or ceiling. Humidity stains warn us that, at least at some point in the building, a high humidity problem is occurring.
While humidity is very necessary for breathing, it is important that its presence in the air is between 40% and 85%. There is often much discussion about excess humidity as it is more visible, but low humidity also does not bring us anything good, on the contrary. Below this range, discomfort in the respiratory tract can occur and problems in the lungs may arise.
First of all, if the problem indoors is due to low humidity, it is a much easier solution. For this, humidifiers are the simplest option to ensure our homes have a higher vapor of water in the air. What can happen if, on the contrary, there is an excess of humidity?
- The main problem of humidity is when it increases above the allowed levels. It is at that moment when it can become a problem and must be eliminated.
- If possible, in warm and humid areas, the issue should be addressed before it becomes evident. It is worth using a humidity meter to discover the values we live with, before we start noticing its harmful effects on walls or even on our bodies.
- To absorb humidity, what we need is ventilation. Whether through airing out closed spaces or using mechanical ventilation. An example? If we shower in a bathroom without ventilation, we will immediately see the windows fogged up. The moment we open the door, that effect disappears and we can see ourselves in the mirror.
- The first step would be that, to ventilate naturally and allow the vapor of water in the environment to escape, renewing the air in the process. This is possible with good windows depending on the placement, but it is not always sufficient. Especially in old and poorly adapted houses.
- The next recommended step would be to opt for dehumidifiers. These devices collect water vapor in the air and either store it in a container or expel it outside. Ideally, they should lower humidity to levels of 60%, although if the levels we have in the house are very high, the device will struggle to do so. Especially in large rooms.
- If the dehumidifier does not work, consideration should be given to installing a mechanical ventilation system. If it is dual-flow, even better, as it would prevent fogged windows in bathrooms.
To be able to breathe better, we need to absorb humidity in the most efficient manner. We could say that the three usual steps are as mentioned above. First, try natural ventilation. Get a dehumidifier if just opening the windows is not enough. And finally, opt for a mechanical ventilation system.
If, however, we focus on the best option, that will always be mechanical ventilation, as it will calculate exactly how much air to extract and introduce. It is the most expensive and requires installation, but it is a very positive change in the home that brings other benefits as well.
Improving health by absorbing humidity

In Spain, problems related to vapor in the air are due to excess, which is why we care about absorbing humidity. Normally, low values occur in very cold climates in Northern Europe. In our country, it is usually the opposite, and particularly in coastal areas or near rivers, we can have very high humidity levels.
It is essential to eliminate humidity, as the list of problems it can cause is notable:
- We notice it in comfort, as humidity makes the temperature rise significantly.
- In summer, we sweat a lot due to humidity. And in winter, the cold seeps into our bones.
- Humidity releases strong odors.
- Mold can appear, especially on ceilings and walls.
- Our furniture may be significantly affected.
- Humidity can cause respiratory problems.
For all these reasons, absorbing humidity that is in excess is a very important mission in our homes. Especially if we do not have a good ventilation system and the building is old.
