Where do we spend the most time? Some will say they are home more hours, others at work. And many will claim they spend too many days traveling. But what we cannot ignore is that, in modern life, where we spend more time is inside buildings. Comfort has increased tremendously in recent decades, and while years ago when it was hot at home during summer, the norm was to go for a walk, nowadays it is normal to turn on the air conditioning. Therefore, maximizing our quality of life indoors must be something we take into account.
Likewise, enjoying a great quality of life at home does not mean that in winter we can be in short sleeves as if it were summer, nor that we should have the house full of appliances or devices that supposedly make everything more comfortable. Sometimes, less is more and what is really important is to focus on what protects our health and improves our day-to-day life.
What is the most important thing to consider when it comes to quality of life indoors ? Undoubtedly, the air we breathe . Normally, we always worry about pollution in cities and not letting the traffic smoke invade us. But it is also very common that we do not pay attention to the enemy of our homes, stale air . And that is produced when there is no air renewal indoors .
The temperature of the air and its quality will determine our comfort at home and also health in general. It is not enough to have heating in winter and air conditioning in summer, but we must consider those dangerous enemies such as humidity, polluted air, or dust mites and germs, among others.
Some of the actions that influence quality of life indoors are:
- Lighting. It is not the same to live in a basement as in an attic, but in reality, natural and artificial lighting is something we can choose and that, besides improving our energy efficiency at home -and therefore light consumption-, also helps us with comfort indoors . Take advantage of natural light whenever possible, but on very sunny summer days try to minimize the impact of sunlight with curtains and blinds. You can opt for automation systems to ensure that the blinds adjust to the needs of the day. On the other hand, use LED bulbs and do not skimp on light but on inefficient power.
- Just the right furniture. Less is more, even when decorating homes. Spacious rooms -regardless of whether they are large or small- are much more comfortable. Storing clutter is not good for comfort at home and also means that we will never be at peace.
- Neutral colors. White walls and furniture in black and white are design strategies that are back in fashion. We should avoid dark and especially loud colors, such as red, orange, or yellow. Such shades can make it harder for us to fall asleep at night.
- Adjusted climate control. We should not overdo it with cold or heat. It is beneficial to enjoy temperatures of around 21°C in winter and 26°C in summer. Otherwise, it will be unnatural and, in addition to unnecessary energy spending, we will notice significant changes upon stepping outside.
Ventilation to improve quality of life indoors
What will our comfort at home depend mainly on? Undoubtedly, on the necessary air renewal . The major problem with traditional air conditioning, such as heating and air conditioning, is that they do not create a circulation that extracts poor-quality air, nor do they allow humidity or bad odors to leave the house. Worse yet, by keeping windows closed to maintain warmth in winter and coolness in summer, what is generated is a mass of stale air that can cause illnesses, discomfort, and bad odors, among other negative effects. To avoid this, the best solution is to opt for a mechanical ventilation solution. This way, it is possible to automatically renew the air. If it is a double flow system , we can even bring in air from the outside, completely renewed, which has also been previously filtered to be purer than outside the home. Additionally, this process is done completely automatically thanks to sensors and measuring devices, both for air quality and for humidity and pollution.
