Ceiling fans in summer, do they work or not?

Before the widespread use of mechanical ventilation systems and being able to have the most ecological and efficient solution to heat in our homes, the most common was to have an air conditioning unit or, at worst, to use fans. While the first option is very expensive and consumes a lot of energy, the second offers much less comfort. But what about ceiling fans? Are they more efficient than regular fans that can be moved from one room to another?
Ceiling fans are very common in hotels and also in large venues. They also became popular for a time in many homes, but never too much. Despite their cost, below one hundred euros, they have the added problem that they require a simple installation, but that discourages many potential users.
Initially, we could confirm that, in reality, ceiling fans can indeed improve comfort in our homes more efficiently than portable fans. However, the ultimate intention of ventilation is that we can enjoy a cooler environment, and with normal fans, whether they are ceiling or portable, the temperature will not decrease.
This does not mean that our thermal sensation does not improve. Moving air gives a feeling of cooling, and feeling the air makes us feel better in summer. However, we must consider that the ceiling fan should be placed exactly where we will spend most of our time: at the table where we eat, the sofa, or the bed. If we are not under the action radius, obviously, we will not notice any improvement.
With a flow of air above us, the moisture in the air evaporates and a cooling effect occurs. This is why using the fan increases comfort, although it has very limited capabilities. On days with little heat, it will be sufficient. But during the hottest times of the year, it will only produce a limited feeling of well-being.
Likewise, the fan works much better in environments where temperatures are drier. In areas of high humidity, such as the Spanish coast, its effects will not be as noticeable.
Is the ceiling fan better than more common portable fans? Yes, for a matter of size. Normally, portable fans do not have blades as large as ceiling versions. And the more airflow the fan provides, the less heat sensation there will be. A ceiling fan can improve the comfort of several people at once.
We can also install a ceiling fan on a terrace or other outdoor spaces, where it is impossible to have other types of air conditioning options.
The winter mode in ceiling fans
The least known function of ceiling fans is the winter mode. This is a feature that makes the blades spin in reverse, and instead of pushing air into the room, it collects it and sends it upwards. This mode of this type of fan is activated by a button, usually small, that is typically incorporated into the body of the devices. Since it is activated only a couple of times a year, it is a nearly hidden button that many users overlook.
The effect of the winter mode of the fans is to de-stratify warm air. Normally, warm air tends to be stored in the upper areas of a room, while cold air remains on the floor. When we activate a heating system, the heat accumulates over our heads and we feel cold in our feet, when it should be the other way around. This function of the ceiling fan aims to precisely reverse this trend.
The winter mode of ceiling fans is not completely effective in preventing heat stratification -especially if the heating system comes from wall heaters instead of floor panels- but it helps a lot.
In any case, if we do not have a mechanical ventilation system, using this type of fan can greatly help improve comfort on less hot days or enhance the thermal sensation even in winter. But it is not the best solution.
To avoid excessive spending on air conditioning, the best thing is to have a dual flow mechanical ventilation system. In these cases, hot air is removed from the rooms in summer and expelled outside. At the same time, air from the street will be introduced, filtered to prevent contaminants and particles from entering, which will also go through an inverter system that will cool the street air. It is a way to achieve comfort in all rooms in summer and also in winter that cannot be achieved only with ceiling fans, and whose energy expenditure is very similar or even lower.
