Bad odors in the home are one of the problems that most affect our comfort during those times we are at home. They become more noticeable when, upon crossing the threshold of our home, we feel what has sometimes been called "stale smell". However, it is more a problem of poor ventilation along with other defects that may exist in our homes.
It has usually been recommended to always open windows and air a room to eliminate bad odors at home, but that is often not enough. It is necessary to do something more to eliminate this scourge that usually affects many buildings.
Furthermore, bad odors can be a symptom that something is wrong at home and that there may be a defect that poses health problems for those living there:
- Humidity problems are one of the main causes of bad odors at home, which can also lead to health problems in people. Respiratory complications may occur as a result.
- Strong odors from some of the chemical products we use at home, such as disinfectants or common insecticides, which are so necessary in summer, can also cause problems in our bodies.
- The odors of smoke and grease from cooking can become harmful if not eliminated by extraction hoods or a good ventilation system.
- Some insect pests can produce bad odors in the home without us being able to detect them. For example, bedbug infestations emit strong odors.
Solutions for bad odors at home
Common fans and opening windows are not the best solutions for eliminating bad odors, as in almost all cases they only succeed in stirring the air, not extracting it. To eliminate that stale air, it would be necessary to use ventilation systems that would take it outside. If it is not possible to have an extraction system, you can always opt for homemade solutions like activated charcoal or camphor. Both elements are fantastic for eliminating bad odors and are easy to find. Camphor is a crystalline and waxy substance with a strong and pungent smell. It is indicated for eliminating moths and microbes.
If in an area of the home we do not have ventilation and there are problems with bad odors or humidity, we can use a piece of camphor and another of activated charcoal to absorb moisture and unpleasant odors. From this point, it is possible to use an air freshener to improve the sense of well-being.
- Find the cause of the bad smell. Sometimes it can be an old sofa or a chimney. Carpets can also harbor very strong odors. If you use air fresheners or scented candles, the problem will be hidden for a while but will return. It is important to eliminate it at the root.
- The dishwasher is likely to get dirty inside and generate very unpleasant odors. To clean it, you can place two cups in the bottom tray with white vinegar. Run a wash cycle without dishes inside, just with those cups. After that wash cycle, be clear that it will smell like vinegar for a while, perhaps even for an hour. But later that smell will go away along with all the unpleasant ones that were there before.
- Besides using kitchen extractors when preparing food, it is important to cover the pans when cooking things that might have strong odors, such as frying or highly seasoned dishes. After cooking, keep the extractor on for a while, open the windows, and use an air freshener.
- In bedrooms, it is essential to maintain good hygiene and change the sheets frequently, as they are often the element that generates the worst odors. You can also use plants to combat bad odors in the rooms.
To eliminate the air carrying bad odors, mechanical double-flow ventilation systems solve the problem by extracting contaminated air. In the same way, they introduce filtered air free of impurities, so this air renewal eliminates humidity problems and others effectively. By keeping the windows closed, there is no intake of contaminated air from the street, and bathroom and kitchen vapors are eliminated almost instantly.
