The Passivhaus standard has become a reference model for efficiency, sustainability, and respect for the environment. At Siber, we know this very well, as we have helped to build many biopassive single-family homes according to their criteria. Without a doubt, one of the projects we are most proud of. We are talking about Lilu’s House, of course.
Biopassive Single-Family Homes: Lilu’s House
Lilu’s House is a passive house designed with the purpose of obtaining the Passivhaus Plus certificate. It is still in process, but when it acquires it, it will be the first house in Catalonia to boast it. A fact that demonstrates that the involvement with this standard keeps growing, although there is still a long way to go. For now, it has an energy classification of type A.It is a single-family house with a surface area of 176.95 m² spread over two floors and a garden. Thanks to our work in the area of ventilation, it will be a 100% healthy space. The air quality that its users breathe will be marked by the absence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehydes, and any other harmful substances for health.
This Passivhaus dwelling aims to be much more than just a simple house. In this sense, it intends to become a center for information and knowledge about the standard. This goal is evident in the fact that it will permanently monitor the levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂), relative humidity, temperature, and any type of contaminating particles. The same can be said about energy consumption.
For its part, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya will use it as a research center. Companies specialized in wood construction will be the main beneficiaries of this fact, but also their students and anyone who wants and needs access to the data collected.
Description and characteristics of the project
The first element that defines Lilu’s House is the total absence of thermal bridges. It is a positive dwelling, meaning it generates more energy than it requires. The structure has been designed and constructed from natural wood, a material that we can appreciate in the walls and in the roof.Without a doubt, the use of wood has been very helpful in ensuring airtightness inside. Let's not forget that it is a natural resource with magnificent insulating properties. The use of windows and enclosures with different performance specifications has also contributed to this. A special mention deserves, in terms of energy resource utilization, the tiles with integrated solar panels.
But there’s more. To build the house, a high-quality and precision-optimized industrialized construction system has been used. The ventilation has been our task. We have included a heat recovery system capable of providing fresh air free of harmful and contaminating substances, maximizing energy efficiency.
Additionally, we have applied protection technologies against radon gas. It is currently considered the second most important cause of lung cancer in Spain, surpassed only by smoking. We have also implemented different techniques for humidity control.
At Siber, throughout our entire trajectory, we have helped in the construction of a wide variety of biopassive homes. However, Lilu’s House is one of the projects we are most proud of. After all, thanks to it, Catalonia will have for the first time in its territory a house with the Passivhaus Plus standard. A success story that adds to the one we have already harvested in the Community of Madrid.
