Protecting against carbon dioxide poisoning in summer

In the hottest months, pollution becomes more noticeable in cities. The increase in summer pollution is something we must consider and against which it is necessary to protect ourselves if we live in large cities or urban areas. Of all the contaminating poisons to which we are exposed in the hotter months, perhaps carbon dioxide is the most noticeable. Emissions of gases and CO2 from cars and various industrial processes are more polluting in summer due to the heat. Therefore, we must protect ourselves against carbon dioxide poisoning and also from other gases.

Above all, what is CO2 or carbon dioxide? We can describe it as a colorless, odorless, and non-combustible gas that is found in low concentration in the air we breathe, around 0.03% by volume.

Carbon dioxide as a contaminating problem is generated when any substance containing carbon is burned. Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

The CO2 begins to be a pollutant and a very harmful poison for humans when its concentration is greater than 20%. In reality, in small percentages, it is beneficial, since while we consider it a pollutant for having been generated by artificial human processes, nature also releases CO2 . For example, photosynthesis.

The most devastating effects of high CO2 percentages and other gases are felt in the atmosphere. Global warming or the rise of tropical diseases stems from the emission of these gases. But it is also very harmful to us and can cause serious respiratory problems.

Carbon dioxide, along with other ozone pollutants such as monoxide or nitrogen dioxide, as well as atmospheric pollution from particles that emanate from the exhaust pipes of buses, motorcycles, cars, and trucks.

What to do to protect against air pollutants in summer and avoid carbon dioxide poisoning and other gases?

At home, we must take into account that there are a series of measures to take to avoid high levels of pollutants. For example:

  • People living on a major avenue with constant traffic may have a problem opening windows. If it is to cool the home and there is no ventilation system, at least they should try to open windows only at night.
  • On days when pollution rises to high levels of ozone, starting at 180 g/m³, it is recommended to spend most of the time indoors and that the house is well closed. Exercising on those days is not advisable.
  • If a mechanical double flow ventilation system is available, the problems of ozone or carbon dioxide pollution are not experienced at home.
At a personal level, we must also protect ourselves in summer, a time of year when we like to spend more time outdoors.

Avoiding carbon dioxide poisoning outdoors

When going out on the street in summer, when it’s hotter and pollution is more noticeable, we must be very careful with the air we breathe.

For example, exercising on very large avenues where cars pass is highly discouraged. It is preferable to go to large parks or seek natural paths.

For people who like biking, it is more advisable than ever to protect against carbon dioxide poisoning and other gases in the atmosphere. In some cases, the use of masks is recommended, although their effectiveness is not fully proven.

To compensate for the polluted air of cities that urban dwellers breathe, it is recommended—especially if there are children at home—that at least once a week the family goes to natural surroundings to spend the day. It’s a way to oxygenate and take a breather.

Pollution levels in summer begin to rise around 14:00. Therefore, any physical or outdoor activities should be performed in the morning whenever possible. At least, it is advisable to avoid the central hours of the day.

Beyond all that, we must be aware of the damage that human activity generates in the environment. Citizens can work to avoid greater pollution. For example, using the car or motorcycle only when absolutely necessary and avoiding indiscriminate use, carrying shopping bags, and avoiding plastics, and even shopping in local markets. Everything helps to prevent in the future carbon dioxide poisoning or other gases in the atmosphere.
