Fight allergies with better air quality at home

What is the allergy season? Initially, it is estimated that the most common ones occur during spring and summer, but autumn is also a time when we can suffer some allergic episode. Allergens, mold, and certain fungi are very common in the mild months when temperatures start to drop, which means that September and October are also times when we can suffer from allergies.

The most common symptoms of allergic periods are nasal congestion, nasal blockage, itching in the nose, tearing, or the presence of very frequent sneezing. All these symptoms could mean that we are developing an allergy. And we normally think that it is due to being close to outdoor areas where pollen is generated. But this overlooks a place where allergies can easily be generated and, usually, more frequently.

It is the generation of indoor allergies that perhaps should concern us more. Our homes can be places of greater unprotection, as we spend many hours in them and also while we sleep, we do not realize the negative effects that the presence of fungi or mold can have that develop allergies in our bodies.

How do we know if we might suffer from allergies at home? First of all, the initial symptoms are what should alert us to this problem. For example, nasal dripping or sneezing, in addition to itching in the nose and nasal congestion should be enough warning signs to know that we are in a situation of suffering from indoor allergies. To a lesser extent, there can also be eye symptoms, although headaches and nasal blockage are more frequent.

Other warning signs to know if we are suffering from allergies at home is if we start to suffer bronchial asthma or have difficulty breathing or a wheezing sensation when air passes through our nasal cavities. Dermatitis could become a consequence of allergies.

Of course, one way to combat allergies can be with antihistamines and medications, but before that, it is much better to prevent than to cure. Cleaning is a fundamental factor in having homes free of germs or fungi that cause allergies, but there is much more than that.

How do we protect ourselves against allergies at home?

The best way to avoid allergies all year round is to protect ourselves against allergens or the causing fungi. Anyone can suffer from allergies, whether they have had episodes before or not, so these preventive measures are for everyone. A healthy home involves breathing better air, free of humidity or fungi.

What is the first preventive measure against allergies at home? To avoid contact with any type of allergen, the ideal is cleaning and keeping dust at bay, but that is not the only thing we should do. Other measures to implement are the following:

  • To improve cleaning and reduce dust, it is interesting to use mops that trap dust. HEPA filter vacuums are the best.
  • Open windows can ventilate closed places without mechanical ventilation systems, but they also attract dust from outside. It is better that air renewal periods and windows opening are just the necessary and adequate.
  • Books, magazines or newspapers are sources of allergens, it is better to store them in cupboards. Wool blankets or feather pillows do not help either, and stuffed animals can be sources of allergic infections.
  • Bedding can be washed every week at more than 60°C to prevent dust mites, which also favor allergies.
  • Carpets are the big enemies of clean air. If carpets are used, they should be washable. Likewise, blinds and curtains should be able to be washed.
  • The use of a dehumidifier can be a great advantage at home if there is no ventilation system to reduce humidity.
  • Showers should be taken with the bathroom door closed and it is important to have extractors that eliminate humidity. Bath mats should also not be used.
All of this can help that we can live without allergies at home, but it is always a good idea to do a thorough review. It should be remembered that to prevent allergies, we also need good air renewal. For this, the most effective way is to have a mechanical double-flow ventilation system, which renovates the air in a fully automated way.

The double flow systems push air from the outside that is renewed and free of impurities, as it first passes through filters that clean it of germs and pollution. In this way we avoid breathing poor quality air, which is one of the main health problems at home and, of course, one of the main causes of generating allergies in indoor spaces.
