Do you know about HDPE? Used in a wide range of sectors, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a rigid and durable thermoplastic polymer that is highly resistant to abrasion and impact, as well as to chemicals and products. Since it can be manufactured in a mechanized way (it can be processed by injection and extrusion), its use is widespread in industrial applications. It is a very lightweight material, making it ideal for laying ducts in ventilation systems. From a sustainability perspective, it is a highly recommended material as it is 100% recyclable.

Main uses of HDPE

Its use is extensively spread. Mainly, it is used in the manufacturing of the following items:

• Disposable plastic containers • Pipes • Toys • Components for prostheses • Protective elements (kneepads, helmets, etc.) • Waterproof sheets • Ducts in ventilation systems

HDPE in ventilation systems

There are many advantages offered by the installation of thermoplastic ducts in ventilation systems:

• They can be used for both blowing and extraction.

• Due to their flat profile (height 55 mm), they do not pose a problem in tight spaces and can be installed in false ceilings. Given the small space they take up, they adapt perfectly for both new construction and renovation (in single-family homes and multi-family buildings), integrating simply and discreetly into the architecture of the building.

• Made of rectangular ducts, ventilation systems with thermoplastic ducts are easy to assemble.

• The rigidity of the ducts reduces the risk of crushing the network.

• Since the inside of the ducts is smooth, pressure losses are minimized compared to flexible ducts. Its non-rough interior finish prevents the accumulation of dust and particles inside, thus avoiding the risk of contamination due to the proliferation of bacteria inside the installation's ducts.

The importance of patented joint systems

It is advisable that the thermoplastic ducts of your ventilation system have a patented joint system. This will achieve the following:

• Prevent all types of leaks • Provide greater sealing to the system • Ensure simple and discreet integration into the architecture of the building • Homogenize the sections of the ducts and achieve a constant volume throughout the layout • Achieve greater ease of assembly, without putties or adhesives

Hygienization and current regulations

Ensure that you and yours breathe healthy, clean, and impurity-free air by equipping your home with a good ventilation system that guarantees a constant renewal of air. Do not forget to provide all components of the ventilation system (duct layout, extraction outlets, injection outlets, and filters) with proper maintenance and cleaning.

According to the current regulations, an annual hygienization operation of the duct layout should be carried out. The leak test should be performed every five years. Due to the characteristics of HDPE mentioned above, these cleaning operations should not pose any problem for our thermoplastic duct system, as they are very resistant to abrasion and deterioration, as well as to cleaning products used during internal disinfection.
