Main components of a ventilation system and their importance

A ventilation system is the method and elements used to ventilate a closed space. For a long time, very little importance was given to this matter and the only thing done in buildings was to place an air extractor. However, today these equipment have been modernized and the new CTE regulations contemplate the improvement of building performance to guarantee health, comfort, and safety. Below we show you the main components of a ventilation system and their importance.

How are ventilation systems classified?

An important aspect to consider before knowing its components is how ventilation systems are classified, based on:
  • Considering the system used to ventilate.
  • According to the type of location to be ventilated.
We review the different ventilation systems you can find:
  • Simple flow systems. They have a VMC (Controlled Mechanical Ventilation) system to extract contaminated air through duct networks that expel it outside. A constant "sweeping effect" is carried out. It is the simplest and does not control the incoming air.
  • Double flow systems. In addition to extracting contaminated air and expelling it outside, they also treat the air that enters. They are the most commonly used nowadays, as they offer better indoor air quality. They have a heat recovery unit that allows for a reduction in energy consumption and, consequently, a considerable economic savings.
Support and advice throughout the installation When considering the class of the ventilated space, there are three different ventilation systems, they are:
  • Domestic/Residential: that found in all types of housing, single-family or multi-family (individual or collective installations).
  • Tertiary: also called commercial. Installed in locations with professional occupancy, such as hospitals, institutes, stores, offices...
  • Industrial: those placed in factories and industrial warehouses.

What are the main components of a double flow ventilation system?

As we mentioned in the previous section, double flow ventilation systems are the most commonly used today due to their various advantages. Therefore, it is interesting for you to know what the main components of a ventilation system of this kind are:
  • Filter. It is essential that the ventilation system has an air filter that prevents dust, dirt, or insects from entering inside. The type of filter used will depend on the quality of the outdoor air and also on the type of air you want to achieve indoors (eliminate odors, dust, bacteria, etc.). The extraction of the indoor air is also filtered to preserve the state and proper functioning of the equipment.
  • Electric resistances, heat pumps, or hot water batteries. They serve to prevent very cold air from entering the indoor space. In addition, they are used to heat the incoming air until it reaches a comfortable temperature. They complement the heat recovery unit.
  • Cooling battery. It may also be necessary to cool the air coming in from outside. The batteries used for this purpose can be cold water or direct expansion. They complement the heat recovery unit.
  • Mixed water batteries. Used to heat or cool the ventilation air coming from a ventilation system. It can also be used to heat or cool independently the rooms or spaces of a property.
  • Energy recovery unit. This is the most effective heat recovery system, considering energy expenditure. Thanks to heat recovery, heating and cooling consumption is reduced. What this equipment does is pre-heat the new air entering in winter and cool it in summer, through a high-efficiency exchanger. With this system, it is possible to recover up to 95% of the sensible heat present in the extracted air.
  • Humidifiers or dehumidifiers. They achieve both adding or removing moisture from the incoming air to achieve more comfortable percentages. A solution that optimizes the balance of humidity levels, promoting comfort and health. Dehumidifiers can have pre and post-cooling batteries thus ensuring optimal performance and control of the treated air temperature.
