Types of HVAC systems: heating, ventilation, and air conditioning

HVAC is an acronym formed by the initials of three key ideas in the air conditioning sector. We are talking about:
  • H: heating.
  • V: ventilating .
  • AC: air-conditioned.
The origins of this concept date back to the late 19th century and the early 20th century. In particular, it was formulated by Willis Haviland Carrier. This American engineer designed the first cooling and moisture control device in 1902. Twelve years later, he released the first domestic air conditioning machine in history. The brand that carries his last name is a global leader in the sale of these types of devices.

Are HVAC and air conditioning synonymous?

Generally speaking, the answer is yes. In fact, the RAE defines air conditioning as the process by which “a closed space is provided with the correct air quality conditions, relative humidity, and temperature for the life and well-being of people.” The three aspects encompassed by the HVAC acronym fit perfectly with this definition.

Heating

It is the process by which heat is added to the air to raise its temperature. There are many different types of air conditioning systems to achieve this effect. From the more modern electric radiators or pellet stoves to the classic fireplaces or traditional gas boilers. There are also different application areas such as, for example, air conditioning systems for buildings, air conditioning systems for homes, air conditioning systems for museums, air conditioning systems for industries, air conditioning systems for passive houses....

Evidently, over time, both homes and buildings have tended to bet on more efficient and environmentally friendly systems.

Ventilation

It mainly consists of renewing the air stored inside a closed property. To do so, it is essential to replace it with air from the outside. The most common way to do this is by simply opening the windows. However, there are places where this is not possible due to the absence of these elements or due to extreme outside temperatures, which do not recommend quickly losing the already conditioned air.

The goal of ventilating a space is to improve air quality. Let us not forget that the mere presence of people inside a property quickly elevates the levels of environmental carbon dioxide.

Air conditioning

It is the opposite of heating. What we mean is that, to reach a comfortable temperature, it reduces the temperature of the air. The most common way is to use a refrigerant gas compressor, although there are others. For example, we can mention the systems that nebulize water droplets. They are more efficient but less effective at cooling the environment.

Better quality air

On the other hand, in recent years, other concepts have been added to the term HVAC. This is the case of humidification and dehumidification of the air and environmental purification. The first two refer to the control of the relative humidity percentage, which is essential to avoid dryness in the respiratory tract and reduce the thermal sensation. The last one relates to the elimination of contaminants and allergens from the air (dust, tobacco smoke, pollen, mites, etc.).
