What does air post-treatment in ventilation consist of?

Air post-treatment in a home or any other type of building can be as important as the original treatment. In fact, thanks to it, we can maintain ideal humidity levels and provide cold or heat to the interior. This is why we find it so important and why we will dedicate this article to it.

Air Treatment

Generally, we do not give the same importance to the air we breathe as to our diet or the amount of exercise we do every day. However, this is a mistake. Breathe stale air and loaded with contaminants can be as harmful as following a poor diet or maintaining a sedentary lifestyle.

We cannot ignore that, at this moment, most of our daily lives take place indoors. In fact, it is normal for us to develop our work in an office or similar place and that we spend most of our leisure time at home. In some cases, as happens with telework, both concepts merge, leading us to spend most of the day without going out.

In this sense, mechanical ventilation systems with double flow seem essential. Specifically, they work as follows:

  • Thanks to a series of sensors, they monitor the indoor air quality in real-time.
  • When certain values exceed the recommended maximums (formaldehyde, CO₂, volatile organic compounds, etc.), the mechanical ventilation and air treatment system is activated.
  • The system proceeds to extract the stale indoor air and, at the same time, introduces clean air from the outside until the values return to normal.
However, this last phase of the process is not done directly. The ventilation system forces the outside air to pass through a series of filters and purifying agents. What is the goal? To eliminate harmful particles, allergens, and microorganisms present in it. In this way, what enters the building is clean air of the highest quality, essential for taking care of our long-term health.

Air Post-Treatment

Now, the process can go a step further and include a air post-treatment system. Usually, it consists of a heat recovery unit that allows improving the interior temperature.

This type of system takes advantage of the airflow of the new air with two objectives:

  • Provide cold or heat to the interior of the house, depending on the time of year we are in.
  • Maintain a stable level of humidity in the infused air.
To achieve this, it is normal to use mixed water batteries. They are very effective when heating or cooling the air introduced into the house through the ventilation system and saving energy.

Benefits

Air post-treatment offers a wide variety of advantages. The first of these is a significant energy savings, as spending on air conditioning and heating is reduced. After all, the air that enters the home is closer to the comfort temperature than if it were introduced directly. This translates into greater well-being for the occupants and better care for the environment.

In any case, just as it is possible to heat water in a home with a ventilation system, it is also feasible to regulate its humidity and provide cold or heat. To do this, the use of recovery units within an air post-treatment mechanism is essential. Without a doubt, a technology that provides many benefits in terms of energy savings and thermal comfort in any type of building.

There is a clear objective to optimize resources. The aim is to advance along the lines of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030) and the philosophy passivhaus. Ventilation companies present projects compatible with energy efficiency and reduction of electricity consumption. This is contributed to by the overall context of crisis, with the resulting uncertainty arising from the invasion of Ukraine. Thus, for example, the government's energy security plan of Spain  is a response to that reality.
