How to achieve the ideal humidity level at home?

An ideal humidity level at home is essential to achieve maximum personal well-being. For this reason, it is important to know why it is so important, what the ideal humidity level is, and, above all, how we can achieve it.

Influence of humidity at home

There are various ways in which humidity appears in a home. One of the most harmful to health is that caused by leaks from pipes or inadequate ventilation, as it can cause respiratory problems, asthma, or allergies.

It is clear that we cannot change the humidity level outside, but we can control the levels inside our property. In this sense, home comfort is achieved with percentages that range from 30 to 50%.

When humidity exceeds these values, some of the consequences can be the following:

  • Feeling of discomfort.
  • Growth of mold and condensation on windows.
  • Water drops in areas of greater condensation.
  • Deterioration of walls, floors, ceilings, and home furniture.
  • General bad smell, including clothing and the inside of closets.
Conversely, low levels can also create problems. For example:
  • Dryness in the skin.
  • Problems with sinusitis.
  • Increased static electricity.
  • Deterioration of domestic furniture, especially that made of wood.
  • Appearance of cracks in the walls.
To avoid all these inconveniences (both from excess and deficiency), it is essential to find a way to achieve an ideal humidity level.

How to achieve the ideal humidity level at home

Given the enormous importance of maintaining an ideal humidity level at home, we provide some tips to achieve it.

Use indoor humidity meters

Thanks to them, it is possible to determine how much humidity is in the air. We should place them in different areas of the home, as levels vary from one room to another. For example, basements tend to be more humid than other spaces in the home, as ground humidity can seep through.

Install an air conditioner

In addition to cooling the indoor air, air conditioning units remove humidity. Generally, such a device should be replaced after a usage period of 12 to 15 years. When they exceed their useful life, their components wear out, making it difficult to remove humidity efficiently.

Use a dehumidifier

Even the best air conditioner does not achieve optimal comfort. A complementary room dehumidifier, however, significantly improves the feeling of well-being. When indoor values exceed 50%, a dehumidifier can be very useful.

Install an extractor in the bathroom

No matter how much we enjoy long showers or baths with hot water, we must not forget that all the steam generated affects the levels in the rest of the house. With a bathroom exhaust fan, this problem is solved quickly and easily.

Place insulation on the floors

Today, the floors of practically all homes are insulated. However, those built before 1950 still have earthen floors. The solution in these cases is to place an insulating barrier with, for example, a layer of sand or gravel.

Finally, if humidity levels are low, it is possible to intervene in the following ways:

  • Place indoor plants.
  • Purchase a humidifier.
  • Shower with the door open.
In conclusion, achieving an ideal humidity level at home is not complicated. However, we must ensure that the parameters of each room are healthy and be clear, for example, when it is advisable to place a bathroom extractor.

Discover which ventilation network best suits your project Ventilation projects increasingly combine sustainability, comfort, health, and energy efficiency considerations. There is a clear objective to optimize resources. The aim is to advance along the lines of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030) and the philosophy passivhaus. Ventilation companies present projects compatible with energy efficiency and reduction of electricity consumption. This is contributed to by the overall context of crisis, with the resulting uncertainty arising from the invasion of Ukraine. Thus, for example, the government's energy security plan of Spain  is a response to that reality.
